This family-owned Igloo Hotel was originally built in 2000 and each year the construction and the design are better and better. The hotel only includes around 30 rooms each year which combined with its idyllic location around 15 miles from the centre of Alta makes it one of our favourite ice hotels anywhere in Scandinavia. The hotel has a different theme every year – some of these themes have included Vikings, Norwegian fairy-tales and local animals.

Hotel Facilities

  • The hotel's outdoor hot tub is ideally located for some Northern Lights viewing (fingers crossed!)
  • The hotel's restaurant 'Laksestua' has won awards for its fantastic dishes. All of which use local ingredients and a fusion of traditional recipes with contemporary twists. The menu here can include such local delicacies as reindeer, grouse breast, cloudberry soup, hazelnut coated Arctic char and Arctic berry pie – in our experience, this kitchen has rightly earned its outstanding reputation
  • The warm facilities including changing rooms, reception area and sauna are very clean and modern and comfortable and a lovely way to relax before spending the night
  • The ice bar is a wonderful place to enjoy a toast of 'anti-freeze' as the welcome drink is affectionately named by the local staff. Even the glasses are handmade from ice sourced from the nearby lake

Room type

All of the rooms at Sorrisniva are built entirely of snow including the bed. There is a curtain separating the room from the corridor and providing privacy during the night. The room temperate inside the igloo hotel is around -5°C regardless of the temperature outside. Before turning in for the night you will be provided with an Arctic grade sleeping bag and a fleece liner. These will keep you toasty warm during the night as you sleep on reindeer skins and blankets covering the mattress which sits upon the ice.
