[title] => Family Rainforest Adventure Holiday in Costa Rica
[ordering] => 0
[code] => 4020
[intro] => A tiny country that is simply brimming with adventure and natural spectacles, there is a huge amount to be enjoyed in Costa Rica. From tropical greenery and unspoilt beaches to active volcanoes and immense cloud forests, the delights are endless. Learn more about the culture of this unique location while enjoying boat trips, hikes and ziplining – all included in the holiday price.
[description] => The saying ‘Good things come in small packages’ was practically created for Costa Rica.
Despite covering less than 0.05% of the world’s landmass, this wonderful country offers a staggering variety of landscapes: pristine coastline, rainforest, cloud forest, mountain ranges, wetlands, and other aquatic habitats. Another huge attraction of Costa Rica is, of course, the incredible variety of fauna and flora, with some five per cent of the world’s biodiversity, found within its borders.
Our active holiday itinerary has been crafted to ensure that your family gets to enjoy as many of these natural wonders as possible in an active and fun-filled way. During our adventure holiday you will stand in awe at the foot of a volcano, fly through the treetops, and boat through incredible rainforest canals – all activities are included in the cost of the holiday. One of the advantages of the country’s small size is that there are no arduous days full of travel or internal flights in order to enjoy them, as everything is within a manageable distance.
A key highlight of any family holiday to Costa Rica is the fact that you will meet some of the friendliest people on the planet. It has frequently been ranked as one of the happiest countries in the world – from our experience, we can safely say that this is completely true! Studies have determined that locals have the highest level of life satisfaction on Earth. When we asked our friends in Costa Rica if they agreed, they simply replied, “Look around you, who wouldn’t be happy here?”
They couldn’t be more right!

The park is home to the active Poas Volcano and has one of the largest craters in the world! The National Park features one of the summits of the Central Mountain Range, which boasts magnificent natural landscapes. It offers an excellent introduction to Costa Rica's diverse natural world. We recommend that you wear walking shoes, hat, sunscreen, and rain jacket.
Next on the itinerary is a short drive along scenic roads through dairy farms and flower plantations to La Paz Waterfalls Gardens. This incredible area is a Nature Park and a Wildlife Refuge and Rescue Centre that features some of the most famous waterfalls in Costa Rica.
0You will walk on a well-maintained trail to see four majestic waterfalls, stopping at unique viewpoints along the way to admire the forest. There's also a hummingbird garden, serpentarium, frog pond, a small aquarium and large enclosed butterfly observatory. This tour includes entry fees, lunch and taxes.
[2] => Today’s early start will be well rewarded and you will enjoy a traditional Costa Rican breakfast en route to your destination; the river port of La Pavona. You will meet your boat for the transfer through the long waterways and canals mirroring the jungle into the Tortuguero National Park (approximately three to four hours transfer depending on traffic and road works, including the boat trip).
Along the route, you will be able to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife and plant life that call this home. Tortuguero is one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world, navigating through beautiful rivers, canals, and lagoons. Have a unique experience in this exceptional place of imposing beauty surrounded by a great variety of flora and fauna.
After arrival and time to refresh in your rooms at Pachira Lodge, a family-style lunch will be served at the lodge.
After lunch at your lodge, you discover the local town by boat for a walk and to mingle with the locals. You will visit the Green Sea Turtle Conservancy Museum to learn about the lush tropical environment in which you now find yourselves and their conservation effort to preserve one of the most critical reproductive and spawning sites of the Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) in the Western Hemisphere. Tortuguero in Spanish means gathering of turtles.
After returning to the lodge, there will also be some free time to explore or relax around the swimming pool Before a tasty family-style Caribbean dinner.
[3] => After breakfast, you will embark on a guided boat exploration and wildlife observation of the surrounding river waterways and canals in Tortuguero National Park followed by a guided walk. Lunch will be served back at the hotel restaurant at 12.00pm and the afternoon is yours to enjoy how you please. Take a dip in the pool or watch the lush tropical scenery from the comfort of your hammock.
[4] => This morning you will leave your lodge by boat, before travelling inland by coach to the wonderful and lush green scenery of Sarapiquí and your Rainforest camp.
You will stop for lunch en route at a local restaurant and afterwards continue your private transfer to a peach palm plantation inland in Palmitour for a unique insight of an ancient staple food tree of the rain forest cultures in the Americas. The Pejibaye Palm Tree is among the native species of the lush, green rainforest of Sarapiqui and your next destination, Selva Verde Lodge & Reserve.
After arriving at your room accommodations, the afternoon will be free to relax before dinner is served in the lodge restaurant.

Enjoy a personalised and leisurely ramble through private reserve trails with our knowledgeable naturalist guide, who can answer any questions about your remarkable surroundings. This tour is the best way to start the day before returning to enjoy a wholesome country-style breakfast at the lodge and time at leisure to explore the gardens and pool.
Lunch featuring fresh produce from the region will be served at the lodge restaurant. After lunch, you can rest or explore more of the many trails of this private reserve.
This evening a guided night tour is scheduled for you to observe the transformation of the forest into a nocturnal stage of activities of the numerous nocturnal resident wildlife.
[6] => Enjoy your last breakfast at Selva Verde Lodge! Pack luggage and check out from the lodge.
Departure to Chilamate de Sarapiqui for a guided tour visit of family run Finca Paraíso Orgánico (Organic Paradise). We recommend guests wear toe-covered shoes, hat, sunscreen, repellent, light clothes, and waterproof jacket.
The Organic Paradise Tour features an eco-friendly, family endeavour born 25 years ago of the belief that organic farming is the future for humanity and our amazing planet because it is the way to sustain life. The stunning natural beauty of this area in the northern region of Costa Rica inspired us to transform our vision and beliefs into a viable, sustainable rural Agri-tourism concept to minimise disruption of nature’s balance. The farm is devoted to organic agricultural practices of the highest standards, expanding the application of organic techniques in pineapple farming to a variety of other local crops, including cassava, lime, guanabana, and an array of tantalising spices.
Finca Paraíso Orgánico is committed to bringing more employment to the community through our farm operations with Organic Pineapple Sogo, a foundation created for the community operating this diverse agricultural plantation.
Your bilingual guide will show you all the agricultural processes from land preparation, developing plantations, flowering, induction, meristems, and harvest· Reserved for the end of the visit to this organic pineapple plantation is, of course, pineapple tasting.!
After this visit, continue your private transfer and sightseeing tour to La Fortuna for lunch and visit La Fortuna Waterfall (70 meters); after this unique visit, continue to the next hotel destination, The Lomas del Volcan Hotel.
After arrival at the hotel and check-in, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy the Arenal volcano views from the gardens and pools or from the terrace of your bungalow.
[7] => This day promises to be one of the most exciting days and highlights of your visit to Costa Rica! Following breakfast, you will be transferred to Sky Park Arenal for the Sky Limit Adventure Package that includes a canopy (zip line), tram, hanging bridges, guided nature trails, and optional activities like rappelling and Tarzan swing for the whole family. This activity package also includes lunch and taxes.
[8] => After savouring your last breakfast in Arenal, check out, and CRT Staff will take you to visit the Tenorio Volcano National Park. The park is filled with many natural wonders, but perhaps the most impressive is the Celeste River. The river gets its spectacular colour from mineral molecules suspended in the water that reflect the blue spectrum of sunlight, and it's impressive to see how the turquoise hue contrasts with the surrounding green forests. The guided walking tour of Tenorio Volcano National Park and Rio Celeste will be the last Caribbean-influenced weather area and a transition area from Tropical Rain Forest to the Tropical Mesoamerican Dry Forest before crossing over to the Pacific Seaboard.
After your guided visit to Tenorio National Park the route will descend the Tenorio Volcano slopes into the plateau valley between this volcano and the Miravalles Volcano National Park, onto your next destination Las Pumas Wildlife Rescue Centre with lunch at Rincon Corobici.

[0] => Upon arrival at Kota Kinabalu International Airport, a guide will be waiting to transfer you to your wonderful beachfront accommodation, around a 15 to 30 minute drive away, depending on traffic conditions. You have this evening to yourselves so you can relax and settle into your new surroundings.
[1] => There is no better way to become familiar with the tropical waters of Borneo than to spend the day exploring the stunning islands and coral reefs that sit just off Kota Kinabalu.
You will take a boat around the islands during the day with guided snorkelling tours during the morning and afternoon where you can get acquainted with some of the region’s aquatic wildlife.
[2] => The Kiulu River rapids are graded as level 1-2 and so it is ideal for families and perfect for a really fun day. After instruction you will take to the water for a very entertaining trip downstream, passing through stunning rainforest and passing small villages. After lunch, you’ll return to the hotel around mid-afternoon.
[3] => This morning you will wave goodbye to the coast and take the short flight to Sandakan (not included in the holiday cost, please speak to our travel experts for a quotation). If you are lucky enough to get a window seat on the left of the plane (and it is a clear day) you should see spectacular views of the imposing Mount Kinabalu as you fly past.
On arrival, you will be transferred to Sepilok and your delightful lodge accommodation near the world-famous Orangutan Sanctuary. Take the afternoon to settle in and enjoy your surroundings before the adventure continues once again tomorrow.
[4] => After breakfast, you will visit the Sun Bear Conservation Centre and the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Sanctuary where you will watch a feeding session. The sanctuary is world renowned for its efforts to save this magnificent animal through rehabilitating orphaned orangutans. You will watch a video about the work that is done here before feeding time. The orangutans are able to come and go as they please so there is no guarantee of a sighting, but close encounters are frequent and you must listen to the instructions of the local guides at all times.
After lunch, you will experience yet another wildlife encounter that is unique to Borneo; Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary which will allow you to experience these rather bizarre looking monkeys at close quarters.
[5] => Today encapsulates the essence of Borneo in terms of nature and wildlife. You will first explore the Rainforest Discovery Centre with a guide. There are some exceptional sights in the reserve and many trails to explore as well as the thrilling canopy walkways, which allow you to get up close to some of the biggest trees you are ever likely to see. It’s a fascinating place.
After lunch, you’ll be transferred by road (a ~ 2-hour transfer) to the Kinabatangan River. On arrival at Tanini Kinabatangan, you’ll check-in to your room. Late afternoon, you’ll join your first boat cruise along the river in search of wildlife along the river banks.
This evening your guide will accompany you for a night walk in the jungle when the forest takes on a very different appearance. These walks are guided by specialists who seem to have an unfathomable ability for spotting wildlife.
You will spend the night in a comfortable, en-suite chalet at the rainforest lodge and will fall asleep listening to the sounds of the jungle.
[6] => Before breakfast, you’ll enjoy a rainforest boat trip. There is the potential to see the proboscis monkey, as well as macaques and leaf monkeys, gibbons, the occasional crocodile and possibly a wild orangutan. You may even be some of the lucky few who witness the delightful Borneo pygmy elephant.
For lunch today, you will join a cooking class at Tanini Kinabatangan, which is led by some of the local villagers working in the lodge. You will be shown how to prepare a local dish before having the chance to savour the results of your efforts.
After lunch, you will also have the opportunity to take part in a Batik painting activity. It’s then time for your second late afternoon river cruise in search of more amazing wildlife.
After dinner, you will join a traditional dance class led by the villagers from nearby Kampung Bilit.
[7] => After early morning refreshments, you will head back out on the boat for another attempt to spot some of the rainforest’s inhabitants. Upon your return to the lodge, you have the chance to take part in its environmental tree planting programme.
The Gomantong Caves are world-famous as the home of the swifts whose nests are harvested annually to make bird’s nest soup. They are also truly spectacular in their own right. The sight of the birds, bats and creepy crawlies that inhabit the caves is definitely something you won’t forget and the scale of these caves is rather awe-inspiring.
From Gomantong, you’ll travel to Sandakan and learn about the water village, St. Michael church, War Memorial and Puh Jih Sih temple.
It’s now time to check out and head back to Sepilok.
[8] => Following transfers to Sandakan Airport, you fly back to Kota Kinabalu, where you will check-in, once again, to your wonderful seafront resort.
[9] => If you have never dived before, but fancy giving it a go, then today is your lucky day! You will enjoy a scuba diving discovery experience (amazing for a non-diver). This will be a truly memorable experience.
For those who are qualified divers, you can participate in a leisure dive with our expert team and for those who prefer to stay on the surface, there is snorkelling available. A spectacular array of coral and aquatic life, possibly even sea turtles and stingrays, await you. Both, the leisure dive and the snorkelling are subject to availability locally.
[10] => After breakfast, you will explore the villages and spectacular countryside that surrounds Kota Kinabalu by mountain bike. This trip will provide an insight into the daily lives of the local people as well as some stunning scenery. You will travel on front suspension mountain bikes, following a route that your guide will tailor to your group; this may include gravel tracks, quiet country roads and possibly even some jungle routes. Back at your hotel you can enjoy a final evening and reflect on all of the exceptional experiences you have had.
[11] => Sadly it is time to wave goodbye to Borneo or we can arrange for you to extend your stay. We can arrange a relaxing island break, or a PADI diving adventure to expand on the basic skills you learnt earlier in the holiday. Borneo is one of the most popular areas in the world for diving and it’s easy to see why. Please speak to one of our Travel Experts for further information.

[0] => Upon arrival in Marrakech, your transfer vehicle will take you to your accommodation at Riad Nyla, approximately 20 minutes away.
Once you have checked in, you can make yourselves at home in your accommodation for the night. Why not try the hotel restaurant for dinner or you can ask them for a recommendation in the local area.
[1] => Fill up at breakfast in preparation for a lovely excursion exploring the Atlas Mountains.
A two-hour transfer will take you to your starting point, the village of Imlil, from where you will spend the day trekking in this scenic region with a mountain guide.
Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains, looms in the background as you take to the trail. You will walk through small hamlets and woods filled with walnut trees, weaving up to higher ground along the mountain track.
The views are incredible and this is a marvellous way to show off the natural side of Morocco, which is easily missed when just sticking to popular urban attractions.
There will be the chance to visit at least one village in the area for a sense of life in these rural parts of the country, and lunch will be provided. The trip can be tailored to the needs and abilities of the group also.
You will return to Riad Nyla in the late afternoon.
[2] => You will all be whisked away for a fabulous tour of Marrakech’s impressive souks. Potters, olive-sellers, tanners, dancers, magicians...the list of people and stalls you will encounter here is endless.
Cameras should always be at the ready, and given the wild mix of life, every photo opportunity is likely to be as remarkable as the next.
After this bustling day, you can sit back and relax during your last evening at Riad Nyla.
[3] => Experience the magic of the Agafay desert with a unique stay at either Inara or Scarabeo Camp. You'll stay in a luxury glamping suite with panoramic views of the stunning Atlas Mountains and sleep under the star-studded sky.
[4] => At Kasbah d’Eau, you can sit down with your hosts and discuss the activities you would like to schedule during your stay. We do not include these so you have complete control over what you would like to do and how active you would like to be.
The Activities available are: Camel trekking, Quad biking, Berber lunch, Farm tour and argan oil, Surfing (also wind-surfing and kite-surfing), horse riding and cookery lessons. For more details on these and an indication of local prices, please speak to one of our travel experts.
[5] => Tuck into your last Moroccan breakfast before being transferred to Marrakech Airport for your journey home. Please note that the transfer time is around 3 hours.

[name] => Summer Arctic Wilderness of Spitsbergen
[title] => Summer holiday to the Arctic Wilderness of Spitsbergen, Norway
[ordering] => 96
[code] => 5212
[intro] => This six-night summer holiday takes place on the wonderful Spitsbergen Island in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard. Take two separate boat trips across the spectacular Isfjorden and visit the Nordenskiöld Glaciers, as well as the incredible Borebukta Bay. You will also dogsled on wheels along the picturesque coast and look out for the Midnight Sun!
[description] => Largest of the islands in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, Spitsbergen is a wonderfully scenic destination for an Arctic summer holiday, shedding its winter coat for pleasantly cool temperatures and glorious Midnight Sun.
This six-night holiday transports you to the town of Longyearbyen, tucked away in its own bay next to the sublime Isfjorden. There will be two trips by boat over its tranquil waters. The first goes to the staggering Borebukta Bay on the lookout for walruses and the second heads to Nordenskiöld Glacier
It will be possible to take in the Isfjorden from the coast when participating in a fantastic session of dog sledding on wheels. Abandoning winter snow sleds for specially designed wagons, you can sit back and look at the water as you speed by on land.
Our itinerary also features a guided tour of the surrounding Longyear Valley, which is vast and largely untouched. You will also look around the peninsula of Hotellneset and visit the amazing Global Seed Vault. This is an intriguing facility built inside a mountain to store samples of the world’s crop seeds as a safety reserve in the face of war and natural disasters.
On top of this, there will be an Arctic Wilderness Evening at Camp Barentz, located several miles out of town. Get a taste of local hospitality inside a traditional cabin building – appropriately named ‘Gammen’, or ‘Enjoyment’ – and tuck into a dish of reindeer by firelight.
We have included a free day in the itinerary for you to explore Longyearbyen at your own pace. It is possible to book the ‘Experience a miner’s life’ activity, which will give you an authentic look into the island’s mining history with a visit to the Gruve 3 shaft. Wearing proper miner’s clothes, you will be guided through, looking at equipment that still remains underground and learning about the past.

[0] => Having touched down at Svalbard Airport, you will be collected and transferred to the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel, which is only ten minutes away. After unpacking and getting comfortable in your cosy room, you might like to try the on-site Nansen Restaurant for dinner, which offers a lovely view of the town.
[1] => After breakfast, you will get a two-hour introduction to Longyearbyen on an expert-led sightseeing tour. After being picked up from your hotel, you can look forward to a drive through the open and unspoilt Longyear Valley. Here, in the summer months, you can see a host of birds which have returned from their winter migration.
As you head along, your guide will point out the fascinating coal mines of Adventalen. You will then explore the Hotellneset Peninsula and the area around the airport – look out across the Isfjorden and admire its calm waters.
A visit will then be made to the Global Seed Vault. Built inside a mountain like some sort of futuristic fortress, it is the world’s largest facility for storing seeds of every kind of crop imaginable (there is space for some 4.5 million different types of seed). This provides an essential back-up in the face of wars, natural disasters, and plant extinction. The Vault’s official website describes it as the ‘ultimate insurance policy for the world’s food supply’.
Throughout the tour, your guide will inform you about the flora, fauna, and other highlights of each location. There will also be plenty of stops for taking photos.
The day will close with an Arctic Wilderness Evening at Camp Barentz, situated in the Advent Valley, around six or seven miles from Longyearbyen. Trade the lights of the town for a roaring fire in a traditional cabin-like building which has been affectionately titled ‘Gammen’ – appropriately, this translates as ‘Enjoyment’. Tuck into a delicious reindeer dinner followed by cake while your hosts tell tales about Spitsbergen and its famous polar bears. While you will be based indoors, you may wish to go outside to catch a glimpse of the Midnight Sun. We recommend, therefore, keeping extra warm layers to hand as outside temperatures can still be a little on the cool side during the summer.
[2] => Following breakfast, you will embark on a boat trip featuring natural sights and local culture. You will board the brand new ‘Kvitbjorn’ boat, a modern design with an innovative hybrid engine for sustainable sailing in the Arctic.
Leaving Longyearbyen, the boat will travel across the grand Isfjorden. As you travel North towards the bay of Borebukta, keep an eye out for walruses. They can often be spotted resting on ice floes or gathered in colonies, relaxing on the beaches and inlets of the island. Hot drinks and snacks will be served before heading back to shore. On arriving back in Longyearbyen, you may wish to explore the local restaurants for dinner options or book a special tasting menu in advance, as listed in our ‘Personalise’ section.
[3] => Today is a free day, including breakfast at the hotel. You might like to stroll around Longyearbyen or head to the harbour for a walk along the coast. Alternatively, you might prefer treating yourself to a spa and sauna session in the hotel.
You can also book an activity which will take you into Longyearbyen’s past as a mining town. Experience the life of a miner with a trip to the Gruve 3 shaft, where light from head-torches will reveal old equipment left just as it was back in the day, waiting for a shift to begin. See the ‘Personalise’ tab for more details.
Have fun trying out the local cuisine in town and be sure to look out for the Midnight Sun as the day comes to an end.
[4] => Enjoy breakfast in the hotel before the day’s high-speed activity: dog sledding on wheels. Our winter trips would have you driving a normal sled over the snow. This activity features sleds which have been specially adapted with wheels to make wagons for fast-paced summer rides.
You will be taken to meet the dogs at a centre close to the town. Choosing the pack to carry you along, you will then be transferred to the starting point at Taubanesentralen, the central cableway station in Longyearbyen. There will be a driver to control the fourteen dogs pulling the wagon, so you can sit back as the journey unfolds. Passing structures from the town’s industrial history, you will also catch beautiful vistas of the fjords and mountains nearby. The route will go along the coast to the pristine area of Vestpynten and back. It is worth keeping some extra layers in case you get chilly.
[5] => After breakfast comes the second boat trip on this holiday, which is just as enchanting as the first. Step aboard the MS Bard – a new and groundbreaking hybrid electric catamaran, specially designed to leave the smallest footprint possible whilst exploring the Arctic. You will travel north into Billefjord, making your way to the magnificent Nordenskiöld Glacier - keep an eye out for sea birds winging their way through the air, and take in the refreshing fjord breeze. Stopping here, you will be served a light lunch on board. During the cruise, your guide will explain the natural history and cultural heritage of the areas being visited. The boat has a kiosk with waffles, drinks, and other snacks on offer. It will also be possible to hire binoculars from here.
[6] => Eat your last Longyearbyen breakfast before being transferred to the airport for your journey home, taking back memories of the splendour and soothing silence of Spitsbergen Island. You might like to extend your holiday by staying in the city of Tromsø or Oslo in mainland Norway.

[description] => Small-scale, big experience
A cruise allows you to explore a variety of destinations without the hassle of overland travel. The downside on most cruises, however, is that you will be on board with thousands of other people.
That’s where a small-ship cruise comes in. During our hand-picked holidays, you get all the benefits of a cruise, without the large crowds. You can be safe in the knowledge that our ships can port in far smaller destinations and that you’ll travel with a small group of like-minded travellers who want to experience the destination in the same meaningful way. It's also much more environmentally-friendly than large cruises.
Whether you want to cruise the Croatian coast or explore the wilds of Greenland and Iceland for a totally different cruising experience, we have the small-ship cruise to suit you.

Croatia on a small-ship cruise
Our small-ship cruises allow you to visit some Croatian gems, travelling in comfort and exploring in style.
Our 34-metre longships are a delight. They are wonderfully equipped for exploring the coastal highlights such as Dubrovnik as well as some areas which are further off the beaten track such as Plitvice National Park. Choose from our Cruise the Island and Cities of the Dalmatian Coast trip or our Highlights by Land and Sea holiday here.
We also offer Croatia trips on a catamaran, for an even more personal experience. These vessels carry around 10 people so it’ll just be you, the skipper and a small group of like-minded travellers. Choose from our Elaphiti Island Active Adventure or Adventure Sailing Weekend for a catamaran experience.

Arctic highlights
For those who want an adventure with a difference, we have a range of cruises showcasing the very best of Greenland and Iceland.
These voyages have a real exploratory undertone, focusing heavily on the natural wonders of these remote and wild islands.
You could combine both Greenland and Iceland during our Natural Wonders cruise. On this holiday, you’ll visit the exceptional ice fjords and remote townships which lie around the coast. You’ll also cross The Denmark Strait to the Westman Islands and make port in Iceland where we can arrange a multitude of land-based activities.
To experience Iceland in its entirety, our Small Ship Exploration holiday is a perfect choice. Travel from Reykjavik and back again, stopping at a huge variety of ports that allow you to soak up the natural wonders in this unforgettable destination.
These voyages take place onboard the Ocean Diamond which carries a maximum of 224 people. It is completely equipped for the Arctic while still offering a range of modern comforts. The expert staff and ground excursion options available make this an ideal way to explore this outstanding region.
