[title] => The Midnight Sun
[alias] => midnight-sun
[description] => What is the Midnight Sun?
The Midnight Sun is essentially where the sun does not set below the horizon, causing 24 hours of daylight. This is due to the tilt in the world’s axis which makes the North Pole face towards the sun in the summer.
The effect of the Midnight Sun is, of course, longer days. People in this region take full advantage with festivals, barbeques and summer activities such as kayaking and hiking. It is said that those who live in these regions have more energy during the months of the Midnight Sun and can take the time to appreciate the evenings filled with warm light and long shadows.
Another benefit of the Midnight Sun is that it makes even the most remote regions greener. The flora and fauna are given an energy boost which leads to a growth of delicious fruits such as cloudberries and lingonberries.
When does the Midnight Sun occur?
Within the Arctic Circle, this natural occurrence is visible from around the 12th June to 1st July, with a greater date range the further north you travel. In the northernmost inhabited region of Europe, the Svalbard Archipelago does not experience a sunset from around the 19th April to the 23rd August.
We offer several dedicated Midnight Sun trips which all take full advantage of this natural occurrence. There are also a variety of activities we offer throughout the evenings so that you can watch the way the sun barely dips along the horizon before rising again.
Where can I go on holiday to see the Midnight Sun?
We offer a range of Midnight Sun holidays. Whether you want to adventure on a self-drive tour to Norway or immerse yourself in the wilderness of Finnish Lapland, we have the holiday to suit you. Talk to an Artisan Travel Expert today on 01670 785 085 to discuss your perfect Midnight Sun holiday.

There is another route you can take to avoid the ferry crossing, however we feel it misses some of the many memorable sights along the way!

Wilderness Hotel Inari is an incredibly popular hotel for us over on our Aurora Zone brand and we have sent thousands of happy travellers there since it opened in 2017. The welcoming staff, delicious food and idyllic setting are just as stunning in the summer months as when the snow arrives too.

[0] => You will be met upon arrival at Ivalo airport and transferred the 40 minutes to Wilderness Hotel Inari. Here you will check in to your room and enjoy an evening meal in Restaurant Ukko with panoramic view of Lake Inari. After dinner you may wish to take advantage of the extended daylight hours and enjoy a stroll along the lakeshore.
[1] => After breakfast you will transfer to the nearby Husky Farm to meet the animal sso synonymous with Lapland. Along with the husky farm’s owner you will get to meet several beautiful husky dogs on this tour.
Although these devoted canines’ biggest love is pulling a sled through the snow during winter, summertime training is crucial. You will learn about huskies and their way of life in the North at the farm. You will learn all about how their handlers are so devoted to these dogs and their health and welfare and there may even be some puppies to meet as well. If you would like to upgrade this farm visit to include a hike with the dogs or joining one of their training tours which include pulling a kart on wheels, then please speak to the travel experts for further information or pricing.
After visiting the farm, you will transfer back to Inari for a free afternoon. Alternatively, there are several hiking routes around the hotel which reception can advise or you can hire a fat bike locally to explore the quiet road which follows the lakeside.
[2] => Following breakfast, you will transfer the short distance to Inari village to visit the Sámi Siida Museum. Here you will have time to explore this newly renovated museum with lots of fascinating information about the local area including its history, the indigenous Sámi culture, and local flora and fauna. The museum is designed to give you an insight into this magical part of the world across each season of the year.
After a picnic lunch you will head out on a cruise on the stunning Lake Inari. With its 3000 rocky islets blanketed in birches and pines, Inari Lake boasts incredibly beautiful and tranquil surroundings to sit back and soak in. You will also be able to see Ukko island which held a special importance to the Sámi people and is included in the exhibit at the Siida museum.
[3] => Today we have left free for you to relax and enjoy your surroundings during your last day in Finland. There are a number of additional activities which can be booked either locally or in advance – depending on how active you would like to be you can choose from a guided hike or fat biking or even river rafting. Slower paced options include berry picking and a boat trip to Lemmenjoki National Park.
[4] => This morning it is time to bid farewell to Lake Inari and return home. If you would like to spend some time in Helsinki on the way home please speak to our travel experts for further information – if not then we hope you leave Inari with some wonderful memories of this destination as not many people are lucky enough to see it!

[name] => Tromsø & Sommarøy - City & Islands Under the Midnight Sun
[title] => Midnight Sun Holiday in Norway - Tromsø & Sommarøy
[ordering] => 31
[code] => 5225
[intro] => Experience the perfect mix of Norway’s natural scenery with buzzing city culture during this four-night stay. You will spend two nights in the heart of Tromsø and another two on the peaceful island of Sommarøy with a Polar fjord cruise and Midnight Sun cruise to enhance your stay.
[description] => Northern Norway is not your typical summer destination but when you consider the highlights on this trip - white sandy beaches on a remote island, sailing tours across fjords, local cuisine and culture - then being out of the norm is most definitely not a bad thing. What’s more, when you consider that from mid- May until the end of July (c.22nd May-22nd July), this area is washed in the 24-hour glow of the Midnight Sun, we can’t think of a better time to visit this spectacular destination.
This four-night trip gives you an excellent mix of buzzing city life with quaint coastal villages, offering you the chance to experience the real Norwegian highlights. You’ll start in Tromso, known affectionately as the ‘Paris of the North’ or the ‘Gateway to the Arctic', with each nickname becoming abundantly clear when you set foot here. With its vibrant selection of restaurants and museums and surrounded by spectacular nature, your time in Tromsø will allow you to experience both. You’ll have plenty of free time to explore the city and the included activities of the Polar fjord cruise and Midnight Sun/Sunset sailing cruise are the perfect opportunity to get up close to the fjords and your breath-taking natural surroundings.
The second half of your trip takes place in Sommaroy, known fondly as ‘Summer Island’. With clear blue waters and white sandy beaches, this peaceful location is a sublime place to stroll around and explore. Your hotel overlooking the Atlantic Ocean also provides a wonderfully scenic backdrop for your included three-course Arctic dining experiences.
With long daylight hours, jaw-dropping scenery, and exciting activities, this four-night stay is your chance to turn a typical summer holiday on its head for an unforgettable trip.

[0] => Following your arrival at Tromsø Airport, you will be transferred 15 minutes to your hotel in the city.
You’ll be staying within easy walking distance of Tromsø’s many restaurants where you could try some of the local dishes.
Please note: the order of activities will be confirmed in your final travel documents and the order shown here is for illustrative purposes.
[1] => Following breakfast, you will experience genuine Arctic wildlife such as sea eagles on a cruise through the magnificent fjords that surround Tromsø. You will leave Tromso behind and soon be in picture postcard scenery, while a selection of snacks are provided (including fresh fish) as you. This is the perfect combination of adventure and comfort as your vessel has a warm cabin if required but you can also stay on deck to admire the unmissable views.
Your crew will feature experienced fishermen from the area and these local “pirates” will tell you old tales and traditions that their ancestors have passed on through generations. If you wish you will even get the opportunity to fish and sample the catch!
This tour last approximately 4-5 hours.
Back on land, you’ll have the rest of the afternoon free to do as you please before your sailing excursion this evening.
Tonight, the tour will start at a nearby location where it’s time to make the most of the glorious golden sunlight that bathes the surrounding nature during a stunning cruise. You’ll set off at 9 pm so if you’re visiting May-July you’ll still have an abundance of sunlight thanks to the Midnight Sun (c.22nd May-22nd July). If you’re travelling outside these months, you’ll get to experience the golden hour and watch the sunset (weather permitting).
This peaceful time of the evening makes perfect viewing for nature and wildlife in the fjords that surround Tromsø. Hot drinks and snacks are available for purchase during the cruise.
[2] => Today, following breakfast, it’s time to check out of your hotel and head to Sommarøy, just over an hour away. The bus journey allows you to see more of Norway’s beautiful landscape as you make your way into the traditional fishing community of Sommarøy.
Your hotel overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, right in the heart of this remote, yet thriving coastal community.
Enjoy lunch in the hotel in a beautiful setting, situated by the sea and serving food from the Arctic. Afterwards, why not take a stroll around the island – you can circumnavigate this little gem and its famed white sand beaches in about an hour, but please take your camera and allow time to take some picture of your stunning surroundings.
This evening, dinner will be served in the hotel.
[3] => Today, following breakfast, you’ll have the day free to yourself to explore Sommarøy. Wander around the coastal path or take one of the many hiking paths to get up close to the beautiful nature. Alternatively, you might want to enjoy one of the many optional activities, such as sea kayaking, a boating tour of the islands, or a hiking tour of the surrounding hills – please see our personalise tab for full details.
Tonight, another three-course Arctic dinner will be served in the restaurant at the hotel so you can enjoy your final night peacefully by the water.
[4] => Today it is unfortunately time for your city and island adventure to come to an end. Have breakfast in the hotel before we transfer you to the airport for your flight home. If you have an early flight time, we will box up breakfast for you to take with you.

Huskies’ enthusiasm for the trail is infectious and you will soon leave the stresses of the modern world behind as you enjoy the peace and quiet of the sunlit woodlands. The hike is 1.5-2 hours and is followed by a campfire lunch, usually a Norwegian fish stew and cake (because you have earnt it!).
After lunch, you will tour the dog yard and meet the puppies, and learn about the life of the dogs, their mushers and the competitive sport of sled dog racing. You will then return to Tromso where you can relax in preparation for the evening excursion or spend some time in this interesting town or perhaps visit the Fjellheisen Cable Car.

Take two separate boat trips across the spectacular Isfjorden and visit the Nordenskiöld Glaciers, as well as the incredible Borebukta Bay. You will also dogsled on wheels along the picturesque coast and look out for the Midnight Sun!
[description] => Largest of the islands in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard, Spitsbergen is a wonderfully scenic destination for an Arctic summer holiday, shedding its winter coat for pleasantly cool temperatures and glorious Midnight Sun.
This six-night holiday transports you to the town of Longyearbyen, tucked away in its own bay next to the sublime Isfjorden. There will be two trips by boat over its tranquil waters. The first goes to the staggering Borebukta Bay on the lookout for walruses and the second heads to Nordenskiöld Glacier
It will be possible to take in the Isfjorden from the coast when participating in a fantastic session of dog sledding on wheels. Abandoning winter snow sleds for specially designed wagons, you can sit back and look at the water as you speed by on land.
Our itinerary also features a guided tour of the surrounding Longyear Valley, which is vast and largely untouched. You will also look around the peninsula of Hotellneset and visit the amazing Global Seed Vault. This is an intriguing facility built inside a mountain to store samples of the world’s crop seeds as a safety reserve in the face of war and natural disasters.
On top of this, there will be an Arctic Wilderness Evening at Camp Barentz, located several miles out of town. Get a taste of local hospitality inside a traditional cabin building – appropriately named ‘Gammen’, or ‘Enjoyment’ – and tuck into a dish of reindeer by firelight.
We have included a free day in the itinerary for you to explore Longyearbyen at your own pace. It is possible to book the ‘Experience a miner’s life’ activity, which will give you an authentic look into the island’s mining history with a visit to the Gruve 3 shaft. Wearing proper miner’s clothes, you will be guided through, looking at equipment that still remains underground and learning about the past.

[0] => Having touched down at Svalbard Airport, you will be collected and transferred to the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel, which is only ten minutes away. After unpacking and getting comfortable in your cosy room, you might like to try the on-site Nansen Restaurant for dinner, which offers a lovely view of the town.
[1] => After breakfast, you will get a two-hour introduction to Longyearbyen on an expert-led sightseeing tour. After being picked up from your hotel, you can look forward to a drive through the open and unspoilt Longyear Valley. Here, in the summer months, you can see a host of birds which have returned from their winter migration.
As you head along, your guide will point out the fascinating coal mines of Adventalen. You will then explore the Hotellneset Peninsula and the area around the airport – look out across the Isfjorden and admire its calm waters.
A visit will then be made to the Global Seed Vault. Built inside a mountain like some sort of futuristic fortress, it is the world’s largest facility for storing seeds of every kind of crop imaginable (there is space for some 4.5 million different types of seed). This provides an essential back-up in the face of wars, natural disasters, and plant extinction. The Vault’s official website describes it as the ‘ultimate insurance policy for the world’s food supply’.
Throughout the tour, your guide will inform you about the flora, fauna, and other highlights of each location. There will also be plenty of stops for taking photos.
The day will close with an Arctic Wilderness Evening at Camp Barentz, situated in the Advent Valley, around six or seven miles from Longyearbyen. Trade the lights of the town for a roaring fire in a traditional cabin-like building which has been affectionately titled ‘Gammen’ – appropriately, this translates as ‘Enjoyment’. Tuck into a delicious reindeer dinner followed by cake while your hosts tell tales about Spitsbergen and its famous polar bears. While you will be based indoors, you may wish to go outside to catch a glimpse of the Midnight Sun. We recommend, therefore, keeping extra warm layers to hand as outside temperatures can still be a little on the cool side during the summer.
[2] => Following breakfast, you will embark on a boat trip featuring natural sights and local culture. You will board the brand new ‘Kvitbjorn’ boat, a modern design with an innovative hybrid engine for sustainable sailing in the Arctic.
Leaving Longyearbyen, the boat will travel across the grand Isfjorden. As you travel North towards the bay of Borebukta, keep an eye out for walruses. They can often be spotted resting on ice floes or gathered in colonies, relaxing on the beaches and inlets of the island. Hot drinks and snacks will be served before heading back to shore.On arriving back in Longyearbyen, you may wish to explore the local restaurants for dinner options or book a special tasting menu in advance, as listed in our ‘Personalise’ section.
[3] => Today is a free day, including breakfast at the hotel. You might like to stroll around Longyearbyen or head to the harbour for a walk along the coast. Alternatively, you might prefer treating yourself to a spa and sauna session in the hotel.
You can also book an activity which will take you into Longyearbyen’s past as a mining town. Experience the life of a miner with a trip to the Gruve 3 shaft, where light from head-torches will reveal old equipment left just as it was back in the day, waiting for a shift to begin. See the ‘Personalise’ tab for more details.
Have fun trying out the local cuisine in town and be sure to look out for the Midnight Sun as the day comes to an end.
[4] => Enjoy breakfast in the hotel before the day’s high-speed activity: dog sledding on wheels. Our winter trips would have you driving a normal sled over the snow. This activity features sleds which have been specially adapted with wheels to make wagons for fast-paced summer rides.
You will be taken to meet the dogs at a centre close to the town. Choosing the pack to carry you along, you will then be transferred to the starting point at Taubanesentralen, the central cableway station in Longyearbyen. There will be a driver to control the fourteen dogs pulling the wagon, so you can sit back as the journey unfolds. Passing structures from the town’s industrial history, you will also catch beautiful vistas of the fjords and mountains nearby. The route will go along the coast to the pristine area of Vestpynten and back. It is worth keeping some extra layers in case you get chilly.
[5] => After breakfast comes the second boat trip on this holiday, which is just as enchanting as the first. Step aboard the MS Bard – a new and groundbreaking hybrid electric catamaran, specially designed to leave the smallest footprint possible whilst exploring the Arctic. You will travel north into Billefjord, making your way to the magnificent Nordenskiöld Glacier - keep an eye out for sea birds winging their way through the air, and take in the refreshing fjord breeze. Stopping here, you will be served a light lunch on board. During the cruise, your guide will explain the natural history and cultural heritage of the areas being visited. The boat has a kiosk with waffles, drinks, and other snacks on offer. It will also be possible to hire binoculars from here.
[6] => Eat your last Longyearbyen breakfast before being transferred to the airport for your journey home, taking back memories of the splendour and soothing silence of Spitsbergen Island. You might like to extend your holiday by staying in the city of Tromsø or Oslo in mainland Norway.
Please see the ‘Personalise’ tab for more information and speak to one of our Travel Experts.

[description] => Small-scale, big experience
A cruise allows you to explore a variety of destinations without the hassle of overland travel. The downside on most cruises, however, is that you will be on board with thousands of other people.
That’s where a small-ship cruise comes in. During our hand-picked holidays, you get all the benefits of a cruise, without the large crowds. You can be safe in the knowledge that our ships can port in far smaller destinations and that you’ll travel with a small group of like-minded travellers who want to experience the destination in the same meaningful way. It's also much more environmentally-friendly than large cruises.
Whether you want to cruise the Croatian coast or explore the wilds of Greenland and Iceland for a totally different cruising experience, we have the small-ship cruise to suit you.

They are wonderfully equipped for exploring the coastal highlights such as Dubrovnik as well as some areas which are further off the beaten track such as Plitvice National Park. Choose from our Cruise the Island and Cities of the Dalmatian Coast trip or our Highlights by Land and Sea holiday here.
We also offer Croatia trips on a catamaran, for an even more personal experience. These vessels carry around 10 people so it’ll just be you, the skipper and a small group of like-minded travellers. Choose from our Elaphiti Island Active Adventure or Adventure Sailing Weekend for a catamaran experience.

Arctic highlights

You could combine both Greenland and Iceland during our Natural Wonders cruise. On this holiday, you’ll visit the exceptional ice fjords and remote townships which lie around the coast. You’ll also cross The Denmark Strait to the Westman Islands and make port in Iceland where we can arrange a multitude of land-based activities.
To experience Iceland in its entirety, our Small Ship Exploration holiday is a perfect choice. Travel from Reykjavik and back again, stopping at a huge variety of ports that allow you to soak up the natural wonders in this unforgettable destination.
These voyages take place onboard the Ocean Diamond which carries a maximum of 224 people. It is completely equipped for the Arctic while still offering a range of modern comforts. The expert staff and ground excursion options available make this an ideal way to explore this outstanding region.

What is the Midnight Sun?
