From seeing huskies and reindeer travel across frozen winter scenes to catching a splash of a whale’s tail and a breach of a playful dolphin, nothing compares to witnessing wildlife in their natural habitat.

Nature holidays are a large focus here at Artisan Travel. Not only do we have some extremely noteworthy natural landscapes to show off, but the native animals that call it home are just as exceptional. Arctic wildlife holidays

Our winter destinations offer an abundance of wildlife experiences. Travelling to the Arctic, you could see reindeer in almost all of our winter destinations, huskies in locations such as Harriniva, Finland and even polar bears in Ranua, Finnish Lapland. The Wildlife Park in Ranua is home to around 50 different species, so you’ll see a range of Arctic animals including wolves, bears and foxes.

Marine wildlife holidays

There are just as many amazing species living below the surface, too. In Iceland, whale-watching is a real highlight as you head out on a boat tour to look out for the abundance of marine life found here. You could see minke and humpback whale as well as white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises.

The Azores and Madeira are relatively unheard-of archipelagos situated in the mid-Atlantic but are renowned for their marine life. Both the BBC and National Geographic have visited the Azores due to their whale watching opportunities and in Madeira, the sea is warm and pleasant which makes it a perfect year-round base for all sorts of marine life. From bottlenose and Atlantic-spotted dolphins to humpback and short-finned pilot whales, the variety of species found here is incredible.

In both destinations, you’ll have the opportunity to go whale and dolphin watching. As well as this, you’ll get the chance to tick off a real bucket-list experience and swim with the wild dolphins in the Atlantic Ocean.

There's also a hummingbird garden, serpentarium, frog pond, a small aquarium and large enclosed butterfly observatory. This tour includes entry fees, lunch and taxes. [2] => Today’s early start will be well rewarded and you will enjoy a traditional Costa Rican breakfast en route to your destination; the river port of La Pavona. You will meet your boat for the transfer through the long waterways and canals mirroring the jungle into the Tortuguero National Park (approximately three to four hours transfer depending on traffic and road works, including the boat trip). Along the route, you will be able to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife and plant life that call this home. Tortuguero is one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world, navigating through beautiful rivers, canals, and lagoons. You will visit the Green Sea Turtle Conservancy Museum to learn about the lush tropical environment in which you now find yourselves and their conservation effort to preserve one of the most critical reproductive and spawning sites of the Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Mydas) in the Western Hemisphere. After returning to the lodge, there will also be some free time to explore or relax around the swimming pool Before a tasty family-style Caribbean dinner. [3] => After breakfast, you will embark on a guided boat exploration and wildlife observation of the surrounding river waterways and canals in Tortuguero National Park followed by a guided walk. Take a dip in the pool or watch the lush tropical scenery from the comfort of your hammock. Lose yourself in nature, activities, and culture in the Azores with this brilliant seven-night active family summer getaway, based in the city of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel Island.

You will begin with an adventure tour to the Sete Cidades Lake, kayaking on its crater lake and mountain biking in the nearby area. There will be an amazing whale-watching tour over the Atlantic waters, as well as lagoon-snorkelling* at the Vila Franca Islet. 

There will be a chance for you to get acquainted with the island’s volcanic side at Terra Nostra Botanical Garden, where you will bathe in a hot spring. At Furnas, you can taste a traditional cozido stew, cooked using natural steam from the ground. This mix of regional vegetables and juicy meats is only one Azorean delicacy you will be able to sample.

The outdoor reserves and territories of the island will be yours to explore during this trip. Try your hand at canyoning in Ribeira dos Caldeiraes Natural Park, walk over the black sands of Santa Barbara Beach, and take a dip at the Caldeira Velha waterfall. There is also the opportunity to look around the mysterious Gruta do Carvao, the longest of the lava tunnels on Sao Miguel.

Your hotel for the duration of this exciting family activity holiday will be Hotel Canadiano close to the centre of Ponta Delgada, with modern spacious rooms, perfect for relaxing after a day of adventure. You and the family will be picked up and transferred in no time to your hotel. Check in and settle in for the night. [1] => Eat a substantial breakfast before an exciting, full-day outing: the Sete Cidades Adventure Tour! This takes you to the Western side of São Miguel Island to the famed Lagoa das Sete Cidades or Lake of the Seven Cities, and along the way, you will stop at some viewpoints. The deep crater lake is divided by a bridge, virtually forming two lakes that showcase different colours and are known as the Blue and Green Lakes – a wonderful environment where everyone will spend the day mountain biking and kayaking. There will be a picnic lunch break along the way. In the evening, you will be treated to a lovely welcome dinner with a spread of Azorean specialties. There aren’t many places which are as highly regarded for this pastime as the Azores – the islands have even had visits from National Geographic and the BBC! Expert biologists will give you full briefings on safety measures and responsible whale watching before you are taken out over the water by Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) (restrictions may apply for pregnant women and people with lower back problems). Depending on luck and the time of year,there are over 25 different whale and Dolphin species that you might spot, as well as other marine creatures. Life vests and waterproofs are provided.  You will then be transported in a converted fishing boat to the beautiful islet of Vila Franca: a green ring around a crater lagoon. You and the kids can go swimming in this marvellous natural reserve. Snorkelling equipment is not provided, so we recommend bringing your own. Species to look for include rainbow wrasses and Guinea-fowl puffers. [3] => Today is a volcanic culture day! Once you have had breakfast, your first stop will be at one of the oldest remaining tea plantation and factory in Europe, the Gorreana Tea Estates. In addition to looking around, you will also get to sample their produce. It is a must for tea-loving families. From there, it is onto Caldeiras das Furnas with its fumaroles and mineral water springs; they say the water has a different flavour in each one! On the way, you will stop at a viewpoint. For lunch, you will all be served cozido, a traditional Portuguese stew with a succulent selection of meats slow-cooked with locally-produced vegetables. Keeping with the geothermal theme of the day, it will be cooked using only steam from the surrounding earth. Once you have all feasted, everyone will be taken to the famous Terra Nostra Botanical Garden, which showcases a rich variety of native and foreign plants; it is a very pretty place to stroll around. Finishing off this visit is the opportunity to get into a naturally heated pool, with water rich in iron. At a temperature of between 35°C to 40°C, it makes for a super-relaxing experience. Returning to Ponta Delgada, you will make a couple of stop-offs to take in awesome coastal views; cameras at the ready! [4] => This morning following breakfast, you’ll head to ‘Quinta do Agricultor’ for a true Azorean experience on the farm. Locals, Eugenio & Gorete, will greet you on arrival for fun filled ‘day in the life of’ adventure. This husband and wife team are hugely passionate and will share their wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for their traditional way of life. During your visit, as well as learning about Azorean culture, you will have the opportunity to meet an array of farm animals and even try milking a cow! The ethos of Quinta do Agricultor is that guests will arrive as visitors and leave as friends. The afternoon will be left free for you and your family to spend as you wish. You can stay back at the harbour and grab lunch at a local restaurant before being transferred back to São Miguel Park, or take a transfer back straight away. If the morning’s swimming hasn’t been enough, why not have a session in one of the hotel pools? You might also like to leave the hotel behind and explore the streets of Ponta Delgada. [5] => This day’s activities transport you to different parts of São Miguel Island. Tuck into breakfast before being taken to Gruta do Carvao. At almost two kilometres long, this is the longest tunnel of lava on the island – perfect for budding adventurers! After exploring the lava tunnel, you will visit Santa Barbara Beach. Here you can relax on its black sands and take a swim in the ocean. After lunch, the afternoon brings many more natural sights with a journey to Lagoa do Fogo, the ‘Lagoon of Fire’. You will all be blown away by the splendour of this natural reserve area. A drive to Caldeira Velha waterfall follows, with the chance to bathe in its warm, iron-rich waters. There will also be a look around Caldeiras and its billowing fumaroles. [6] => Following breakfast at the hotel, it’s time to make the most of your final full day in the Azores with an unforgettable canyoning adventure in the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park. This location is one of the islands most stunning natural areas, filled with lush greenery, cascading waterfalls and hidden rock pools. After being kitted out with the necessary equipment and a full safety briefing from your experienced guide, you’ll descend through the canyon using a mix of techniques. Experience sliding down smooth rock chutes, jumping into crystal clear pools and abseiling beside waterfalls, all under the careful guidance of your instructors. There are routes suitable for a variety of confidence levels, so whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned adventurer, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Next, it’s into the tropical rainforests for memorable encounters with some of the world’s most endangered species which are indigenous to Borneo’s rainforests. You’ll have the chance to get close to proboscis monkeys, orangutans and sun bears at their respective sanctuaries before searching for them in the wild. There will be rainforest boat trips where you are almost certain to encounter some of the abundant wildlife, as well as a visit to the spectacular Gomantong Caves, famous as a nesting ground for swifts and some 27 species of bat. Immerse yourself in Bornean culture with a local cooking class, Batik painting activity and traditional dance lesson.

You have this evening to yourselves so you can relax and settle into your new surroundings. [1] => There is no better way to become familiar with the tropical waters of Borneo than to spend the day exploring the stunning islands and coral reefs that sit just off Kota Kinabalu. You will take a boat around the islands during the day with guided snorkelling tours during the morning and afternoon where you can get acquainted with some of the region’s aquatic wildlife. [2] => The Kiulu River rapids are graded as level 1-2 and so it is ideal for families and perfect for a really fun day. After instruction you will take to the water for a very entertaining trip downstream, passing through stunning rainforest and passing small villages. After lunch, you’ll return to the hotel around mid-afternoon. [3] => This morning you will wave goodbye to the coast and take the short flight to Sandakan (not included in the holiday cost, please speak to our travel experts for a quotation). If you are lucky enough to get a window seat on the left of the plane (and it is a clear day) you should see spectacular views of the imposing Mount Kinabalu as you fly past. On arrival, you will be transferred to Sepilok and your delightful lodge accommodation near the world-famous Orangutan Sanctuary. Take the afternoon to settle in and enjoy your surroundings before the adventure continues once again tomorrow. [4] => After breakfast, you will visit the Sun Bear Conservation Centre and the famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Sanctuary where you will watch a feeding session. The sanctuary is world renowned for its efforts to save this magnificent animal through rehabilitating orphaned orangutans. You will watch a video about the work that is done here before feeding time. The orangutans are able to come and go as they please so there is no guarantee of a sighting, but close encounters are frequent and you must listen to the instructions of the local guides at all times. After lunch, you will experience yet another wildlife encounter that is unique to Borneo; Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary which will allow you to experience these rather bizarre looking monkeys at close quarters. [5] => Today encapsulates the essence of Borneo in terms of nature and wildlife. You will first explore the Rainforest Discovery Centre with a guide. There are some exceptional sights in the reserve and many trails to explore as well as the thrilling canopy walkways, which allow you to get up close to some of the biggest trees you are ever likely to see. It’s a fascinating place. After lunch, you’ll be transferred by road (a ~ 2-hour transfer) to the Kinabatangan River. On arrival at Tanini Kinabatangan, you’ll check-in to your room. Late afternoon, you’ll join your first boat cruise along the river in search of wildlife along the river banks. This evening your guide will accompany you for a night walk in the jungle when the forest takes on a very different appearance. These walks are guided by specialists who seem to have an unfathomable ability for spotting wildlife. You will spend the night in a comfortable, en-suite chalet at the rainforest lodge and will fall asleep listening to the sounds of the jungle. [6] => Before breakfast, you’ll enjoy a rainforest boat trip. There is the potential to see the proboscis monkey, as well as macaques and leaf monkeys, gibbons, the occasional crocodile and possibly a wild orangutan. You may even be some of the lucky few who witness the delightful Borneo pygmy elephant. For lunch today, you will join a cooking class at Tanini Kinabatangan, which is led by some of the local villagers working in the lodge. You will be shown how to prepare a local dish before having the chance to savour the results of your efforts. After lunch, you will also have the opportunity to take part in a Batik painting activity. It’s then time for your second late afternoon river cruise in search of more amazing wildlife. After dinner, you will join a traditional dance class led by the villagers from nearby Kampung Bilit. [7] => After early morning refreshments, you will head back out on the boat for another attempt to spot some of the rainforest’s inhabitants. Upon your return to the lodge, you have the chance to take part in its environmental tree planting programme. The Gomantong Caves are world-famous as the home of the swifts whose nests are harvested annually to make bird’s nest soup. They are also truly spectacular in their own right. The sight of the birds, bats and creepy crawlies that inhabit the caves is definitely something you won’t forget and the scale of these caves is rather awe-inspiring. From Gomantong, you’ll travel to Sandakan and learn about the water village, St. Michael church, War Memorial and Puh Jih Sih temple. It’s now time to check out and head back to Sepilok. [8] => Following transfers to Sandakan Airport, you fly back to Kota Kinabalu, where you will check-in, once again, to your wonderful seafront resort. [9] => If you have never dived before, but fancy giving it a go, then today is your lucky day!  You will enjoy a scuba diving discovery experience (amazing for a non-diver). This will be a truly memorable experience. For those who are qualified divers, you can participate in a leisure dive with our expert team and for those who prefer to stay on the surface, there is snorkelling available. A spectacular array of coral and aquatic life, possibly even sea turtles and stingrays, await you. Both, the leisure dive and the snorkelling are subject to availability locally. [10] => After breakfast, you will explore the villages and spectacular countryside that surrounds Kota Kinabalu by mountain bike. This trip will provide an insight into the daily lives of the local people as well as some stunning scenery. You will travel on front suspension mountain bikes, following a route that your guide will tailor to your group; this may include gravel tracks, quiet country roads and possibly even some jungle routes. Back at your hotel you can enjoy a final evening and reflect on all of the exceptional experiences you have had. You will continue your self-drive adventure to Svolvær, the largest town in the beautiful Lofoten Islands. Here, you will immerse yourself in the authentic Lofoten lifestyle by staying at the beautifully restored fisherman's cabins located right on the water. Experience the nature and wildlife through activities like a thrilling rib boat safari to spot sea eagles or a serene Icelandic horse ride.

Next, you will drive (and take two ferry rides) to Senja, where you will be greeted by an idyllic Norwegian fishing village nestled amid dramatic mountains and beautiful countryside. You will take the airport express shuttle to your hotel, just 15 minutes away and in the heart of the city, known as the ‘Paris of the North’. We recommend walking around the city and eating at one of the many restaurants on offer before coming back to the hotel and heading to the 11th floor for incredible views on the sky bar. [1] => Today following breakfast, you will check out of your hotel and take the airport express shuttle back to the airport to pick up your car for the week. You can pick up your car at any time so if you would like to explore Tromsø first there are plenty of activities on offer. We recommend visiting the Polar Park - the world’s northernmost park. Once you have your car, you will make your way to Narvik with Norway’s stunning scenery unveiling itself at every turn. Upon arrival, you will check into your hotel, which is one of Northern Norway’s tallest buildings. The sky bar on the 15th floor gives you the best views of the surrounding mountains and fjords, and is the perfect spot to enjoy the Midnight Sun. [2] => After breakfast, you will check out of your hotel and can either start your drive immediately or spend some time in Narvik. You could visit the insightful war museum or take the cable car for panoramic views of the deep fjords and stunning mountains. Today you will be driving to Svolvær, the largest town in the beautiful Lofoten Islands. Upon your arrival, you will check into your unique accommodation the fisherman’s cabins at Svinøya Rorbuer. These traditional cabins are situated right on the water and have been beautifully restored and converted into comfortable and cosy lodging - perfect for experiencing the authentic Lofoten lifestyle. You will be on picturesque island of Svinøya, just a short walk from Svolvær's charming town centre and home to a range of restaurants, cafes, and galleries. You could also book onto an activity to experience the local nature and wildlife. You could take a rib boat safari to see the sea eagles in some of the most awe-inspiring nature in the region. If you’d prefer to stay on land, you could experience an Icelanic horse ride along white sandy beaches and under the Midnight Sun. [3] => Svolvær is the gateway to the stunning Lofoten Islands and you can use it is a jumping off point for a myriad of activities. Whether you take a boat trip to Trollfjord, a narrow and dramatic fjord that's surrounded by towering mountains and frequented by seals and sea eagles. Or you can venture further afield to the pretty fishing villages of Kabelvåg or Henningsvær or the excellent Viking museum at Borg. This evening we would recommend dining at oneone of Svolvær's many excellent restaurants. Lofoten is known for its fresh seafood, so be sure to try some of the local dishes, such as cod tongue or stockfish. [4] => Today following breakfast, you will embark on your longest drive of the trip. You will drive around 380 km, including two ferry rides which will take you around 6-7 hours. There is another route you can take to avoid the ferry crossing, however we feel it misses some of the many memorable sights along the way! Upon arrival at Senja, you will be greeted by this idyllic Norwegian fishing village as you make your way to the hotel surrounded by dramatic mountains and beautiful countryside. We recommend eating in the hotel’s restaurant to try delicious local food with stunning views. [5] => Today, after breakfast, you have the day to soak up Senja. You could stay in town and try beer tasting or you could get up close to the beautiful surroundings on a guided kayaking tour on crystal-clear blue lakes. You will learn about huskies and their way of life in the North at the farm. Marine animals inspire awe in just about everyone, and seeing them in their natural habitat is one experience that is sure to feature on your bucket list. Our itinerary allows you to tick it off three times – you will watch for whales and dolphins from a tour boat and snorkel close to a colourful variety of fish and other underwater fauna when snorkelling* at the islet of Vila Franca.

The rich volcanic heritage of the Azores is something you will be able to enjoy first-hand. You will bathe in a naturally heated spring at the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden. You will also be able to taste a ‘Cozido das Furnas’ stew – an Azorean piece of geothermal gastronomy that puts a twist on the traditional Portuguese ‘cozido’ by cooking it with natural steam.

The extraordinary island environments are perfect settings for activities. You will kayak on the crater lakes of the Sete Cidades Lagoon and cycle in the surrounding area. Slower-paced activities include walking through part of Sao Miguel’s longest lava tunnel and relaxing in the warm Caldeira Velha waterfall.

You will stay in the modern  Hotel Canadiano or, if you have upgraded, in São Miguel Park Hotel,  Marina Atlântico or the Azor Grand Hotel. All the hotels are located in the coastal town of Ponta Delgada.

Check in, unpack and relax – your Azorean adventure is about to begin.  [1] => A filling breakfast will have you all set for the Sete Cidades Adventure Tour. This day-long excursion takes you to ‘Lagoa das Sete Cidades’ on the west side of São Miguel Island. The ‘Lagoon of Seven Cities’ consists of two blueish-green crater lakes ringed by trees. On the way, you will stop at various viewpoints to enjoy this beautiful landscape. One of the stops will be at the Vista do Rei, probably the most famous viewpoint of Sao Miguel Island from where you can enjoy the views of the two lakes and the surrounding landscape. When you reach the lakes, you can cycle over a largely flat ten-kilometre trail, of which ten minutes will be spent moving uphill or you can kayak over the sparkling lake. A picnic lunch is included today. Back at the hotel, you can relax before heading out and sampling the local cuisine (not included). [2] => Breakfast is followed by a morning whale-watching tour. You will usually enjoy the whale watching from a catamaran, however, some trips will be in a RIB boat. If you have a preference, please inform us in advance (restrictions may apply for pregnant women and people with lower back problems). It is no understatement to say that the Azores are one of the best places in the world for this activity – so much so that everyone from the National Geographic to the BBC has paid visits. You will receive an in-depth briefing on safety measures and responsible observation prior to heading out on the tour; life vests and waterproofs will be provided (except on the catamaran). Depending on luck, there will be a range of cetaceans that you might see. July and August are good months for spotting beaked and Atlantic whales, as well as striped dolphins. Sperm whales are also known to make an appearance at this time while bottlenose and common dolphins can be seen all year round. Lunch will be had in Vila Franca do Campo, a pleasant southern town. A refitted fishing boat will then transport you to the splendid islet of Vila Franca, which is a circle of green around a crater lagoon that is open to the sea. Snorkelling equipment is not provided, so we recommend bringing your own if you wish to go in to look at life under the water. Species found here include small red scorpionfish, rainbow wrasses, and Guinea-fowl puffers.    [3] => Learn about the volcanic heritage of the Azores with today’s thematic tour to Furnas. After breakfast, your first stop of the day will be a highlight for tea-lovers. You will be taken to the Gorreana Tea Estates, one of Europe’s oldest remaining tea plantations. In addition to seeing the growing areas, you will have an opportunity to try some of the produce. You will then head to the Caldeiras das Furnas, where you will see the famous fumaroles and mineral springs. Make sure you try the water from each spring. You might notice the variety in tastes because of the different minerals present. At lunch, you will get to try ‘Cozido das Furnas’, the classic Portuguese ‘cozido’ stew of slow-cooked meats and vegetables with an Azorean twist: preparation using natural steam from the ground. Following that, there will be a look around the exceptional Terra Nostra Garden. This visit will finish with the chance to get into the iron-rich waters of a geothermal pool, which has a soothing temperature between 35°C to 40°C. (Please take old swimming costumes as the mineral water will stain them a light brown colour). Travelling via minibus will enable you to visit a viewpoint high above the vivid blue waters and then descend to the lake itself, stopping to bathe in a thermal pool en route. You can also visit the Salto do Cabrito waterfall – although it should be noted this can only be done on foot. The landscape of Madeira is simply stunning and for such a small island, it has a huge variety of scenery. Towering mountain peaks covered in thick, green forests are home to a wealth of flora and fauna and the terraced hillsides are packed with colourful flowers and blooming fruit trees.

The Atlantic Ocean wraps around the Madeiran archipelago and the Gulf Stream makes the sea warm and pleasant and also a perfect year-round home for all sorts of marine life. Bottlenose and Atlantic-spotted dolphins, as well as humpback and short-finned pilot whales, are often found here in abundance, making it a wildlife lover’s paradise.

This itinerary has been designed for you to explore as much of Madeira as possible and to maximise your chances of seeing wildlife on land and sea. You’ll enjoy a tour of both the east and west parts of the island, travelling along the winding coastline, through the deep ravines and across the high, jagged mountain peaks. The sub-tropical climate has created beautiful forests of emerald green, filled with flowing rivers and streams and enchanting Levada, which are just asking to be explored and enjoyed. From the towering mountain peaks, you’ll enjoy splendid views of the landscape beyond and the beautiful blue ocean below.

Thanks to its position in the Atlantic, Madeira enjoys warm, comfortable summers and mild winters. In fact, during most months of the year, you can enjoy the sub-tropical climate of Madeira in comfort, with average highs of 16-18°C from December to February and 18-23°C in the spring, summer and autumn, it is a fantastic place to explore across the seasons.

After exploring the island by road, you’ll take part in a boat trip to the dramatic Desertas Islands, which are a haven for wildlife, including a variety of birds and a monk seal colony. You’ll also get to enjoy a whale and dolphin watching cruise aboard a small boat and, if you are in luck, you’ll even have the chance to snorkel with the wild dolphins as they swim in the waters below; a truly magical experience like no other.

Back on land, a guided walk along the Levada do Rei will take you through the forests and terraces that surround the beautiful valley of Sao Jorge. Walking through ancient laurel forest, keep your eyes peeled for local wildlife as you head towards a gorgeous waterfall and savour the beautiful scenery of this stunning island.

From Funchal, you will follow the winding road up towards Pico do Arieiro, into the heart of the Madeiran mountains. Driving on to Ribeiro Frio, this charming village is nestled in amongst luscious forest and there is a charming trout hatchery, the products of which you will no doubt see swimming along the island’s levadas! From Ribeiro Frio, you can enjoy a short walk to the magnificent Balcoes viewpoint, where you can savour the landscape of rugged peaks and jagged mountain ridges, coated in dense forest. Heading down from the mountains, you’ll pass through Santana, where you can see the traditional thatched roof houses of Madeira and then it is on the enjoy a three-course lunch in one of the most spectacular restaurant locations imaginable. Situated atop gigantic sea cliffs, the restaurant looks out towards the sea and the along the dramatic coastline. Sample some local Madeiran wine from the hotel’s vineyards before heading back to Funchal via Porto da Cruz. [2] => Today you will be transferred a short distance to Funchal’s harbour where you will embark on a boat trip to the mysterious Desertas Islands. Setting sail at approximately 10 am, you will cruise along the seas in a traditional wooden gullet with covered seating and standing space on deck. As the name suggests, the islands are deserted, however, they are a haven for birds, seals and other wildlife. Approaching by sea, the islands gradually loom into focus and the towering cliffs create an imposing vision, which makes you feel as if you are entering the Lost World. A colony of monk seals call these islands home and hopefully, you will get to see whales and dolphins as you make the crossing from Madeira. Birds such as shearwaters, petrels, terns, buzzards and canaries flock to these islands and nest on the tall cliffs and barren ground and the skies are filled with their calls as they fly through the air. After sailing past the colourful rock formations and enchanting coves, you will anchor in a secluded bay where you will have the chance to relax on the deck or swim in the sea. Following this, lunch will be served on board. You will then go ashore and enjoy a guided tour of the area before you head back to Funchal, arriving at approximately 6 pm. [3] => After a day of maritime exploration, today you will stay on land as you explore the western part of Madeira by jeep. This full day tour will take you from Funchal along the coast via the charming towns of Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol before climbing up into the mountains of the island’s interior. You will enjoy an invigorating off road tour leading to the village of Canhas and then up onto the incredible Paul de Serra plateau. Here you will experience stunning views over the serene landscape. Atop the plateau you are so high that clouds often drift over the roads. You will have the option of taking a 20 minute Levada walk here also. Descending from the plateau you will drive through magical Laurel forests, which are brimming with colourful plant life, and reach the coast at Porto Moniz and Seixal, famous for their natural swimming pools formed by cooled lava during Madeira’s volcanic past. Here you will enjoy a picnic lunch and have the chance for a swim. Your route back to Funchal will take you via the caves of Sao Vicente and the scenic Serra d’Agua, before being dropped at your hotel in the early evening. [4] => Today is hopefully going to be a wildlife experience like no other, as you set off this morning in search of whales and dolphins. Following breakfast, you will head out into the Atlantic in search for marine life on a tour lasting approximately two hours. The waters that surround Madeira are teeming with species, including whales and dolphins, so hopefully, luck will be on your side today. You will sail aboard a RIB (Rigid-hulled Inflatable Boat), or small catamaran and your expert captain will navigate the seas as your onboard marine biologist tells you about life in the Atlantic. Bottlenose and Atlantic-spotted dolphins are two of the most common species here and often they enjoy swimming alongside boats as you cut through the waves. Humpback, short-finned, pilot and sperm whales are known to live in these waters and perhaps you’ll spot one of these as you cruise through the seas. If the conditions are right, you will also be given the chance to join the dolphins in the sea as you snorkel alongside the boat. Although the dolphins may not swim as close to you as you would expect in a marine park, seeing them in the wild is an amazing experience and sure to create lifelong memories. You will return to your hotel to enjoy an afternoon of relaxation or city exploration. [5] => The Levadas of Madeira criss-cross the island travelling from the mountain tops down to the terraces, fields and villages below. In the 15th Century, settlers on Madeira began cultivating the land, creating terraces and designing irrigation channels to bring the water down to their crops and by the early 1900s, there were about 200 levadas across the island. During the mid-90s, the State implemented a large construction project to distribute the water more widely and there are now over 1350 miles of levadas on the island. Many of these can be enjoyed on foot as you walk alongside, marvelling at the spectacular views, wildflowers and luscious forests. After breakfast this morning, you will be transferred to the northern part of the island to enjoy the Levada do Rei. This levada starts in Sao Jorge, journeying through thick laurel forest (designated as a World Heritage Site) and then opening up to panoramic views of the farmlands below. Rich in biodiversity, you will see a variety of trees, wildflowers and shrubs, as you venture along this fascinating path. Along the way, there are a few tunnels to travel through, so please bring along a small pocket torch and do mind your head as you go. Arriving at the source of the levada, Ribeiro Bonito, you will enjoy a picnic lunch and savour the beautiful tranquillity of this wonderful location. The walk will last for approximately three and a half hours, encompassing a round trip of roughly 6.3 miles (shorter, less strenuous levada walks are available on request). Due to the nature of the levada, in some places, there are steep drops which should be navigated with care. Please bring along suitable footwear (walking shoes or boots). Returning to the hotel in the early evening, you will be able to relax and unwind. [6] => Today has been left free to you enjoy as you wish. You can choose to simply relax and unwind in the hotel’s rooftop pool, or perhaps amble into Funchal to explore the markets and fascinating galleries and museums. There are a huge variety of cafes and restaurants, so you’re sure to find something to tickle your taste buds. Your week of discovery on Madeira begins with an exploration of it’s lush interior - a Levada walk through ancient laurel forests, complete with waterfalls and ancient tunnels through the rock now overgrown with foliage of the deepest green. It is like walking through the land that time forgot! You will also have a free day to spend as you wish – you can relax at your hotel or make the most of Funchal which has offers attractions as diverse as the Botanical Gardens, a cable car and the Cristiano Ronaldo museum!

 

A trip to these Atlantic islands would not be complete without heading out to sea for some whale and dolphin watching. The Gulf Stream makes Madeira a hotspot for many cetacean species, and the manoeuvrable RIB boats allow a fantastic way to get as close as possible to them without disrupting their natural behaviour.

 

The second of your Levada hikes explores Rabaçal and its stunning waterfalls and the magical 25 Fountains Lagoon, but you will also be able to rest your legs when you experience Madeira's wild side in the comfort of a jeep. You will take to the island’s smaller roads and off-road trails (these can get pretty bumpy!) for some breathtaking views, including the unique lava pools of Porto Moniz. For your final Levada walk, you will hike the Larano trail, an old trade route with stunning cliffside views and glimpses of the island of Porto Santo.

 

Your week will offer a fantastic mix of nature, adventure, and relaxation.

[4] => The full-day Rabaçal Levada walk again immerses you deep in the heart of Madeira's UNESCO World Heritage Laurel forests. You will follow the gravity defying Levada system over stone bridges and past cascading waterfalls. These range from delicate trickles to powerful torrents and are interspersed with dense growths of trees and moss-covered tunnels carved into the rock. Highlights of this route include the serene Lagoa das 25 Fontes (25 Fountains Lagoon) and the majestic Risco Waterfall. Arctic highlights

Authentic wildlife encounters

From seeing huskies and reindeer travel across frozen winter scenes to catching a splash of a whale’s tail and a breach of a playful dolphin, nothing compares to witnessing wildlife in their natural habitat.

Arctic wildlife holidays

Our winter destinations offer an abundance of wildlife experiences. Travelling to the Arctic, you could see reindeer in almost all of our winter destinations, huskies in locations such as Harriniva, Finland and even polar bears in Ranua, Finnish Lapland. The Wildlife Park in Ranua is home to around 50 different species, so you’ll see a range of Arctic animals including wolves, bears and foxes.

Marine wildlife holidays

There are just as many amazing species living below the surface, too. In Iceland, whale-watching is a real highlight as you head out on a boat tour to look out for the abundance of marine life found here. You could see minke and humpback whale as well as white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises.

The Azores and Madeira are relatively unheard-of archipelagos situated in the mid-Atlantic but are renowned for their marine life. Both the BBC and National Geographic have visited the Azores due to their whale watching opportunities and in Madeira, the sea is warm and pleasant which makes it a perfect year-round base for all sorts of marine life. From bottlenose and Atlantic-spotted dolphins to humpback and short-finned pilot whales, the variety of species found here is incredible.

In both destinations, you’ll have the opportunity to go whale and dolphin watching. As well as this, you’ll get the chance to tick off a real bucket-list experience and swim with the wild dolphins in the Atlantic Ocean.
