Nellim is one of our most favourite destinations and regardless of the season, it is a picturesque location and a photographer's dream. Nellim's location means that in the early summer it is bathed in daylight 24 hours a day and the wonder of the Midnight Sun provides photographers with a unique light in which to shoot. With an expert local photography guide to accompany you will experience the best of Lapland in the summer and hopefully capture it on camera.
Alongside the Midnight Sun, the wilderness which surrounds Nellim offers an abundance of delights including crystal clear lakes, fast flowing rivers, rolling fells and forests which are home to the local wildlife. In the summer months the area is so vibrant as it thrives in the daylight and mild temperatures.
A highlight of this holiday is a visit to the wonderful Sarmi Wilderness Lodge on the shores of Lake Sarmi. The lodge offers the chance for you to experience nature at close quarters without compromising on comfort. At Sarmi you can swim under the Midnight Sun, learn about the wildlife and local flora and fish in the clear lake waters. You will go berry picking and enjoy the fruits of your labour. Your evening meal will be cooked over an open fire and will feature as many local ingredients as possible.
Nellim offers a huge amount and no matter when you visit, it offers a wealth of wonderful experiences.

Day 1 Arrival, transfer, Midnight Sun photo workshop
Once your flight touches down in Ivalo, Finland, you will be transferred directly to your accommodation in Nellim where a welcome meal will be waiting for you.
After some time to settle in you will meet with your guide for a Midnight Sun photography workshop with a local guide and photography expert. You will be shown how best to photograph in this unique light. Weather permitting you will be able to start your holiday by capturing the perfect shots before bed. The experience of heading back to your room to sleep whilst it is daylight outside is a strange one and it can be hard to remember the time. Make sure you don't stay up too late however as you have a busy day ahead tomorrow.
Day 2 Sarmi Wilderness Lodge, fishing, swimming in the Midnight Sun
After breakfast at Nellim your adventure begins. After a short transfer you will continue on foot through the forests. Your destination is the Sarmi Wilderness Lodge on the edge of the beautiful Lake Sarmi.
Here you are given the rare opportunity to experience a night in the wilderness without having to compromise on the level of comfort.
A delightful lunch will be prepared by your guide who will use their local knowledge and experience to provide you with details about the local flora and fauna. You will then enjoy a fishing trip on the lake, if you are lucky enough to catch something then you can certainly add it to this evening's menu if you wish.
Meals at Sarmi focus on local ingredients where possible and together with your guide you will rustle up a delicious dinner over an open fire this evening.
There is no running water at the lodge but we highly recommend that you relax at the end of your day in the Sarmi way by taking a swim in the lake under the Midnight Sun. It can be refreshing but the wood burning sauna will be heated for you to enjoy after your dip.
Day 3 Berry picking, final Midnight Sun tour
One of the beauties of sleeping in the wilds of Lapland is the silence which means that this morning you should awaken suitably refreshed.
The changing light throughout the morning makes for continual photo opportunities and these will continue throughout the day.
Your guide will lead you on a short walk in the area surrounding the lodge with the aim of collecting some of the berries that grow on the forest floor, the daylight hours provide exceptional growing conditions and you will get to sample the fruits of your labour. The delightful scenery is very photogenic but with luck you may encounter some of the local wildlife during your excursion.
Back at Nellim this evening and after dinner at the lodge, you will enjoy another Midnight Sun workshop with your guide and with luck the weather will enable you to capture this landscape in all its glory.
Day 4 Farewell to Nellim
Today it is time to bid farewell to Nellim and after breakfast you will be transferred back to Ivalo for your return flights home.

The 34 double or twin rooms are decorated in keeping with local surroundings and culture. All have an en suite shower room and hairdryer. Some of these rooms are located in the main building and others are situated in separate annexe buildings, a short walk from the main building. There are also two hotel rooms with private sauna which can be booked, subject to a supplement and availability.
Sarmi Wilderness Lodge
Nine kilometres from Nellim, on the banks of Lake Sarmi, sits Sarmi Wilderness Lodge. Accessible only on foot or by snowmobile the lodge is a retreat from everyday life and a haven for guests who have the privilege to stay here.
The lodge offers a real wilderness experience but without having to compromise on home comforts as you do in many cases.
Whilst it remains a back to basics experience with no running water or electricity, guests are provided with hot water for washing and solar panels provide a limited supply of electricity (there is also a backup generator). There are composting toilets in a separate building, a short walk from the lodge (around 50 metres) and a wonderful wood-fired sauna on the lakeside so you can steam clean.
There are some real comforts however in the main lodge building. The rooms are beautifully furnished in a rustic style and the delightful soft furnishings and local handicrafts really help create a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. The lodge offers several bedrooms (twins and doubles) which will be allocated to your party accordingly. Single travellers should travel on a prepared to share basis.
There is a communal dining and sitting room with a roaring log fire and a fully equipped kitchen where the guides can prepare meals, although they often prefer to use an open fire.
The focus here is simply on nature and your guides will ensure that throughout your stay you gain an appreciation of this wilderness.
The programmes can vary depending on conditions and your guide will discuss this with you on arrival.
During your time at Sarmi the idea is to get involved in some of the day to day tasks too – for example chopping the wood for the fireplace and sauna and learning how to light the campfire too! It really adds to the whole experience!
The menu here tends to focus as heavily as possible on local produce and is varied depending on the time of year. Your guide will rustle up simple yet delicious meals either on an open fire or in the kitchen at Sarmi – depending on the weather and the meal they are creating.
There is also a large camp fire area located next to the sauna which is an ideal place to relax and enjoy an evening in excellent company with hopefully the Midnight Sun overhead.
