Located on the northern coast of Norway, Senja is an island of incredible beauty and is the country's second largest island after Spitsbergen. It is home to wonderfully diverse and scenic landscapes including fjords, mountains and a picturesque coastline.
Senja charms visitors all year round with its stunning scenery, but summer, with its almost endless days, is a wonderful time to travel, and as well as allowing you to witness the scale and the beauty of the island in full, it offers an opportunity for you to potentially witness the magic of the Midnight Sun.
With the trip being self-drive you have the flexibility to explore the island at leisure and enjoy the freedom that a car provides.
Your base is the charming Hamn i Senja, a beautiful harbour-side hotel where you will stay in modern and comfortable suites. The hotel restaurant serves delicious Norwegian cuisine and you will have easy access to its facilities and additional activities which you can book in advance or locally.
Inclusive activities such as a guided hike in the mountainous scenery and a wonderful boat sightseeing tour taking in the dramatic beauty of the fjords are not to be missed. Hopefully, you will see some of the wildlife that makes this island their home including sea eagles and whales.
We are delighted to be able to offer Senja as a summer experience as it is one of the most beautiful regions we have visited. It is the perfect spot to enjoy some exciting activities as well as plenty of time to relax and soak up the scenery.
Day 1 Arrival and welcome to Senja
Upon arrival at Tromsø Airport, you can collect your rental car and set off for the delightful and easy drive to the idyllic island of Senja.
Your drive will give you your first glimpse of the stunning scenery of the island, with its spectacular fjords and picturesque coastal views. You will be provided with full driving instructions and a satellite navigation system. Your rental car will be a 'mini' class vehicle such as a Citroen C3, or similar. If you would like to upgrade to a larger vehicle then please contact our Travel Experts for a quotation.
While you can travel to Senja by ferry, we highly recommend the scenic drive across the bridge which links the mainland and the island.
On reaching Hamn i Senja you will have the chance to settle into your accommodation before exploring the area surrounding the hotel and its many spectacular view points. A three-course dinner will be served before you head off to bed.
Day 2 Guided walk
This morning will be a leisurely one and following breakfast, you will have the opportunity to relax and take in the tranquillity of the island. Alternatively, you may wish to book additional activities which can be arranged in advance with us (see the 'Personalise' tab for further details). Your hire car also means that you can explore the island at your own pace, the choice is yours.
After lunch back at the hotel, you will enjoy a guided walk towards the mountain of Sukkertoppen. This area of the island offers picturesque mountainous scenery – your guides will point out areas of interest, as well as the rich variety of birds that call Senja home. On your hike, you will each be equipped with a backpack containing drinks and chocolate to enjoy on your journey.
A three-course dinner will be served in the restaurant this evening.
Day 3 Fjord Wildlife Cruise OR Midnight Sun Boat trip
Today brings the opportunity to experience the majestic fjords of the region with a cruise.
The islands that are dotted throughout the fjords are known not only for their dramatic scenery but also their wildlife, with sea eagles, seals, and porpoises being sighted regularly. You can choose to enjoy this wonderful tour of the fjord either during what we would typically describe as ‘daylight’ hours or alternatively make the most of the 24-hour daylight and why not take the cruise at midnight – not something you can do every day!
Being out on the boat is a wonderful adventure and a chance to genuinely appreciate the full beauty of the island. On the tour, you will stop at a beach for some homemade cake.
Regardless of your choice of timings back at the hotel, there will again be the opportunity to relax. We can also arrange further activities for you to up the pace of the holiday – just let us know.
A three-course dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant.
Day 4 Soak up Senja
After breakfast, you will have plenty of free time to enable you to soak up the peaceful atmosphere. You can also take a drive or add in additional activities. Your lunch is, of course, included in the restaurant.
During your stay at Hamn i Senja, you will also have an opportunity to use the unique hot tub (one visit per stay). This is situated in an old boat (on the land) and is a delightful experience. We recommend saving it until your last evening (please confirm your preferred time with reception).
Tonight you will enjoy your final three-course before your return home tomorrow.
Day 5 Polar Park and Departure
Today you will be making your way back to Tromsø either to enjoy some time there or to head back to the airport.
En route, you may like to stop at the Polar Park as entry is included in your holiday. The Polar Park is Europe's northern-most wildlife park and here you can meet wolves and even venture inside their enclosure - an incredible experience (check the 'Personalise' section for details). You can also see bear, lynx, wolverine, musk oxen, Arctic fox, moose, deer and reindeer.
If you have an earlier flight booked today then you may choose to visit the park on your arrival day instead – simply discuss this with your Travel Expert at the time of booking.
After your encounters at Polar Park you will drive to the airport, return your car and catch your flight home. Alternatively, we can arrange for you to extend your stay in the city of Tromsø if you aren't quite ready to bid farewell to the Arctic just yet. See the 'Personalise' section of the holiday page for details.
