Summer Holidays in Iceland

A long day

Known as the land of the Midnight Sun, Iceland enjoys lengthy daylight hours and a 'nightless' night during its summer season.

Only the very top parts of the island are above the Arctic Circle which means that daylight is not 24 hours as it is in parts of Northern Norway and Finland. In July the sun sets in Iceland just after midnight and rises again at 3 am so the days are long and filled with warm and bright light.

These slow sunsets and sunrises make for picturesque displays of colourful skies which last for hours, making summer the ideal time to travel for those with an interest in photographing the landscape in this wonderful light.

The long daylight hours also mean that activities and excursions can carry on for longer in the summer and often locals and visitors alike will stay up until the small hours, enjoying the changes in the light and the boost in energy that the longer daylight hours bring.

The Artisan experience

All of our Iceland trips can be enjoyed in the summer and many prefer to opt for our self-drive trips as driving conditions can be easier.

The ultimate in Icelandic summer experiences can be found in our 'Iceland small-ship exploration' trip which allows you to fully enjoy this season as you navigate around the scenic beauty of the island.

Your first port of call is the dazzling Breiðafjörður Bay where the summer light will highlight the panoramic scenery, unique rock formations and the colourful birds and wildlife that can be found here. During your first few days, you will also witness the brightly coloured fishing village of Arnstapi alongside the secluded and isolated Westfjords region. Here the dramatic natural wonders are seen at their best in the bright light of summer.

Whilst exploring on your cruise, the northern town of Akureyri will be one of your stops. At this time of year, this charming town will be bathed in bright and welcoming light, providing you with the opportunity to explore its shops and cafés as well as its excellent botanical gardens which feature a huge variety of native Icelandic flowers.

Towards the end of this trip, you will go to the incredible Vatnajökull Glacier – the largest glacier in Iceland where the summer light will reflect the dazzling colours of the ice.

Finally, your tour will end in Reykjavik, a cool and cosmopolitan city that takes full advantage of the lengthy daylight through its wonderful and exciting nightlife.
