Norway’s North in the Winter Months

The words ‘Arctic’ and ‘Winter’ conjure up images of expeditions and exploration reserved only for the hardiest of souls; this should no longer be the case! Our expert guides live and work in the region in harmony with their families and can show you it in the most incredible light. We provide guests with the gear that they will need to stay warm during their visit and you’ll be amazed what wearing the right clothes can do to your perception of the cold; our warm thermal suits may not be the most elegant, but they keep you wonderfully warm.

Alexander’s journey begins in Norway as he enjoys Tromsø and Kirkenes. Both destinations offer a wealth of experiences for visitors. In Kirkenes Alexander delights in the delicacy of king crab and we combine a king crab experience with the likes of dog sledding and snowmobiling alongside a night in Kirkenes Snow Hotel – a smaller and arguably less commercial version of the ICEHOTEL® visited in episode one. Tromsø is a city that oozes heritage and adventure as many of the greatest tales of Arctic exploration have begun here. We combine this city with the majestic Lyngen Alps and fjords, giving guests an all-encompassing overview of the area. Both destinations also offer an exceptional opportunity to witness the Aurora Borealis if conditions are favourable.

Svalbard and the island of Spitsbergen are amongst the wildest destinations we feature and their rugged beauty is hard to describe. This is a land where polar bears roam freely and are definitely at the top of the food chain, so travelling with expert guides such as ours is essential.

Scandinavia in the Summer

If you simply don’t like the idea of the cold but want to witness this region then don’t forget that this area truly becomes The Land of the Midnight Sun in the summer months. From May to August the darkness is pretty much banished from this land and the sun bathes the landscape in its golden glow, thawing the snow and creating a landscape that simply begs to be explored.

Witnessing the Midnight Sun is as awe-inspiring as seeing the Northern Lights and we can show you many of the destinations which Alexander visits in a totally different, 24 hours long, light.

The Lofoten Islands, for example, may play host to the Marine Arctic Training Camp in winter but in the summer the landscapes offer a wealth of hiking opportunities and white sandy beaches to enjoy. We offer a Best of Norway - 10-day self-drive holiday which takes in all of the highlights of Northern Norway’s coast in a loop south from Tromsø. The scenery is a joy to witness and the uncrowded roads make it an easy place to tour using a hire car, creating more flexibility than can be offered here during the winter when driving can be a little more challenging.
