*Transfers will stop in the town of Inari and then carry on to Utsjoki.

Staying in cosy, comfortable accommodation run by a friendly Sámi family, guests will leave feeling like friends, knowing some of these stories and secrets of this fascinating culture. Your hotel accommodation (around 2km from Utsjoki town) has great views north across the Teno River and into Norway. You are in prime Northern Lights territory here, with frequent and spectacular displays which even still stop the locals in their tracks. Evening safaris are available during your stay - please see the personalise tab for further details. They are not part of the Artisan holiday because Utsjoki has such great views of the Aurora when they occur that an inclusive trip may be surplus to requirements!

Around Utsjoki, dramatic peaks rise from snow-covered fells above the tree-line and the frozen river lies in front of the hotel, sealed with a layer of thick ice and snow. This winter landscape at the northern tip of Finnish Lapland is the perfect place to experience a variety of incredible winter activities, such as a snowshoe hike in the Sacred Valley and a reindeer farm visit with a sleigh ride, where you will learn about the Sámi culture, which is so predominant in this area. You’ll also get to enjoy a husky safari in Norway, where you can meet the dogs before sledding off across the snow. To add to this, you’ll spend one night dining on a traditional dinner in a warming Sámi hut, as you listen to an enchanting Sámi yoik (song) performance.

We’ve made sure to include plenty of free time, so that you can savour the stunning surroundings of Arctic Finland and make the most of your time away in this remote and breath-taking part of Lapland. Extra activities, such as a tour to the Arctic Ocean, a scenic snowmobile-pulled sleigh safari, or cross-country skiing in the surrounding wilderness can be added to your trip, if you would like to experience all that Utsjoki has to offer.

Today the population density of Utsjoki is 0.25 people per square kilometre. Compare this to London where it is 4,978 people per square kilometre and you have some idea of the remote beauty you may expect. Nothing, however, can prepare you for the reality of this stunning environment where snow covers the ground for six months of the year and the reindeer outnumber the people.

Key facts

Duration:7 nights
Make an enquiry
  • Following your flight into Ivalo, you will be transferred to your accommodation in Utsjoki, which is around two and half hours’ drive away, including a stop at the small town of Inari. The northern skies are visible all the way to your destination and many a transfer has witnessed a display of the Aurora – what a way to be welcomed! Depending on when your flight lands, you will either have a packed dinner during the journey or dinner in the restaurant on arrival.

Your Sámi hosts will greet you at your accommodation. You can head to your hotel bedroom (Aurora permitting) to enjoy your first peaceful night in the very north of Finland.

  • After breakfast, you will meet with your guide and collect your winter clothes, which are yours for the duration. Your introduction to the Arctic starts with a snowshoeing tour in the fascinating Sacred Valley, which has been an important part of Sámi history for thousands of years.

You will learn about the history of the area, as well as the flora and fauna of the region and how to identify the variety of animal tracks dotted across the snow. You will also be shown how to light a fire – an essential skill in these parts. You will be out for around 2-3 hours this morning before heading back to the hotel for lunch.

Your afternoon is free to relax and unwind, or perhaps you will want to make use of the cross-country skis and snowshoes, which are free for you to use all week (depending on availability).

Dinner will be served back at the holiday village restaurant with more time to watch the skies in this remote location, hoping the Northern Lights will perform their magical dance.

  • Your hosts are Sámi reindeer herders, so it is fitting that after breakfast you should learn more about these animals which are so central to Sámi culture. It is a very short walk to the reindeer corrals near the hotel. Here you can help to feed the animals before enjoying a reindeer-pulled sleigh ride covering around two kilometres.

Over a warming drink, you will learn about the lives of the herders and the way in which the reindeer are central to the culture and traditions of this region. Lunch will be had back at the holiday village restaurant. This morning's activity will last for approximately 2 hours.

This afternoon we have left free for you to enjoy your local surroundings at your leisure before dinner in the restaurant.

  • After breakfast, a 50-minute transfer will take you across the border to Tana, Norway. Here you will meet with the local musher who will show you how to handle a sled and a team of eager huskies. You will depart on a husky safari lasting around two hours, travelling two people per sled. There is nothing comparable to the thrill of travelling by dog sled. Whether you are driving or sitting in the sled, it is an exceptional experience.

Following the safari, you will enjoy some snacks and coffee around a campfire. You will have time to say goodbye to the dogs at the end of your tour and take as many pictures as you wish before you head back to Utsjoki for free time and dinner. You will be out for around 4 hours this morning, including transfers.

  • We have left the next three days free for you to either spend relaxing and simply enjoy the stunning Arctic surroundings of Utsjoki or you may wish to take part in some activities.

There are plenty of optional daytime and evening activities which you can book, including taking a tour by car to the edge of the Arctic Ocean, a scenic snowmobile sleigh ride into the wilderness and hunting the Northern Lights on snowshoes or snowmobile-pulled sleighs, among others. Please see the ‘Personalise’ section for further information.  You can also walk over to the Giisá village hall and make the most of its handicraft store and café.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included each day. On day 7, you will enjoy your final dinner in a traditional Sámi hut. Local delicacies such as mushrooms, reindeer and squeaky cheese will be on tonight’s menu. During the dinner, you will hear stories about Sámi life and history and you will also be given a traditional Sámi yoik (song) performance as you sit around the warming fire in the hut.

  • Today, you will be transferred back to Ivalo Airport for your journey home. If your flight is earlier in the morning, you will be given a packed breakfast rather than having it in the holiday village restaurant.

Holiday group size (approximate)

Approximately 2 - 20 people per group

Group sizes
Most of our holidays require a minimum number of participants to operate. Minimum numbers are detailed on each holiday page and are always approximate. Group sizes for tailor-made holidays will vary for each of the activities. For private departures, you may also be joined by other guests during the activities unless you have discussed specific private activities with us.

If your selected date has not yet reached minimum numbers, you will be informed at the time of booking. In the unlikely event that your chosen date has not reached the required minimum numbers nine weeks before your scheduled departure date, we will contact you and discuss the various options available to you. We will always do all we can to operate a holiday and in some cases, we may be able to operate the holiday by combining your itinerary with that of other guests for some activities (this may mean that the maximum group size is increased but this will be discussed in full with you).

If we are unable to operate the holiday, then you will be offered the chance to transfer to an alternative holiday or date (subject to availability). If the alternative is more expensive you will be asked to pay the difference, if it is cheaper then you will be reimbursed. You will also be offered the option to cancel and receive a full refund of all monies paid.

Minimum age

Unless otherwise stated in the 'Key Facts', the minimum age for participation in an Artisan holiday is typically 8 years old (there may be younger children in some destinations who have booked with other companies). If an adult only environment is important to you, then please contact our Travel Experts and they will advise on the best dates and destinations for you. If you are looking for a holiday designed specifically for families then please see our sister company: www.activitiesabroad.com

Consequently, their knowledge and experience are unsurpassed. If there is anything that you are unsure of during a safety briefing or that you would like to clarify with the guides, please make this clear to them immediately before starting the activity.

There may be rare occasions when our guides consider local conditions unsuitable for a certain activity. Hence, your itinerary may be subject to change at short notice, but we will always endeavour to firstly find a replacement on the day and secondly, to provide the cancelled activity later in your stay whenever possible. Very occasionally it proves impossible to provide the activity in which case you will be refunded when you return home.

More than lived up to expectations 19 March 2017 by Mary Piers

The holiday was fantastic and more than lived up to expectations. A very well planned and organised holiday. Very good guides and instructors. So very friendly and helpful. The Husky sledding (was my favourite) because I just adore the huskies and I spent several hours out in the beautiful wilderness driving the tram. Thank you for all your assistance and a huge thank you to all in Utsjoki, I

The whole holiday was so, so excellent 06 March 2016 by Sok Wai Lou

All meals were good quality, excellent scenery around where we stayed, the accommodation was so good...having my own sauna in the house was a real bonus! Henry, the owner of the place was so attentive to our needs (he even provided packed-breakfast the night before we left for Helsinki very early morning). The whole holiday was so, so excellent that I won't hesitate to recommend to my friends.

An excellent experience in all respects 17 February 2014 by Hilary Hazzard

I got back from Utsjoki ('the top of Finland') on Friday and I'm just emailing to let you know what an excellent experience it was in all respects (even at -35°C)Travelling was trouble-free, the hosts were professional-yet-friendly and attentive to our needs (that's me and the only other people there, a couple from Germany) - though we didn't actually need anything outside of what was

provided. The food was particularly fabulous. We agreed that Anne and Petteri made us feel more like welcome visitors than 'tourists' - I particularly appreciated that as a lone traveller - and I'd definitely recommend this for anyone wanting a closer-to-nature experience than some of the hotel-based trips. The Northern Lights made their appearance twice (that we caught). That's not something you could have laid on but I thought you might like to know. Best birthday ever!
