Trips to Ålesund
Sunnmøre is a traditional district in Western Norway and its main city is Ålesund. It is home to some of the most beautiful fjords in Norway, as well as various fishing and farming towns and villages. Ålesund lies roughly 400 kilometres north of Bergen and 300 kilometres south of Trondheim. The easiest way to access Ålesund is by air, with direct flights available from London. The airport is only a 30 minute drive from the town.
Ålesund is located on the waters of the North Sea on a spit of land that reaches out from the fjords and surrounding islands. It is in a truly magical location and offers easy access both to ocean islands and stunning fjords. The town itself is a mixture of charming, characterful houses and buildings mixed with modern design. The beautifully painted buildings on the waterfront highlight the warm, welcoming feel of the town and the Art Noveau style is obvious throughout. Filled with cafés, restaurants and eateries, the town has a vibrant, relaxed atmosphere.Read more
Activities such as sea kayaking, wildlife safaris by boat and small-ship cruises into the fjords are readily available and incredibly rewarding. The surrounding landscapes are unbelievable and the area really needs to be explored as much as possible to be appreciated in its entirety.
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the world-famous and stunningly-beautiful Geirangerfjord is easy to access from Ålesund, as is the equally dramatic Hjørundfjord, both of which form part of the beautiful Sunnmøre Alps and are destinations sure to inspire. You can sail along the calm waters of the inlets, admiring the sheer walls of the fjords and the melting glacial water thundering down through streams and waterfalls. Keep your eyes peeled for birds of prey and sit back and enjoy this awe-inspiring place.
You can also visit the famous island of Runde, home to over 500,000 nesting birds, including a large colony of puffins and often regarded as one of the best bird-viewing sites in the world. In addition to this, the hiking in the Sunnmøre area is incredible. You can walk alongside the cool waters of the fjords and up into the luscious green fields and hills above, past cascading waterfalls and over wooden bridges. Stop for a picnic and treat yourself to some of the best views in the world.
With access to such incredible terrain, Ålesund acts as a great base to explore the area of Sunnmøre and its amazing scenery.
