With the snow and ice of the winter months finally melted, there is arguably no better time to explore Finland’s wild beauty than during the warmer summer months. With no snow or ice to impede you, the summer provides the perfect time to explore and make the most of Finland’s remarkable landscape. From canoeing on it’s lakes to rafting down its rivers, hiking through its forests and fells to cycling through its amazing woodland scenery, summer offers so many opportunities to experience Finland’s incredible wilderness in a way just not possible in the winter.
2) Go glamping in the ‘Midnight Sun’
During the summer months, Northern Finland becomes illuminated by the Arctic sun which never sets, something known as the ‘Midnight Sun’. This is a truly unique experience and what better way to enjoy the beauty of Finland’s landscapes bathed in constant daylight than from the comfort of a purpose-built dome on the shores of Lake Torassieppi? With incredible views of the surrounding wilderness, there really is no better way to experience this incredible phenomenon.
One of the many great things about Finland is that it has something known as ‘Everyman’s Rights’. This means that both Finns and tourists alike can pick their own fruit and vegetables without being charged a penny. With blueberries, lingonberries, cranberries, cloudberries, mushrooms and fresh fish to choose from, there is plenty of amazing natural produce on offer too. Moreover, with some of the cleanest air in Europe, you are unlikely to find fresher or healthier ingredients anytime soon!
4) Go spotting for incredible wildlife
Although the winter months provide you with the chance to enjoy reindeer and husky’s, the wildlife experiences during the Finnish summer are far more special in our opinion. The Northern borderland territories of the wild Taiga forests are not only home to some stunning scenery but the opportunity to spend a night in a remote hide deep in ‘no man’s land’ between Finland and Russia in the company of an expert guide, gives you the chance to experience some of Europe’s rarest wildlife up close. From Eurasian brown bears to lynx, wolves, wolverines, eagles, elk, beavers and more there is so much to look out for and with the ‘Midnight Sun’ providing plenty of daylight there should be plenty of opportunities to witness these majestic animals.
There is arguably nothing more Finnish than a sauna and so it just wouldn’t be right to write a list of things to do in Finland during the summer without mentioning it! Whether it is the lakeside saunas of Torrassieppi Reindeer Farm or the traditional peat and infra-red saunas at Hotel Kalevala in Kuhmo, we recommend that you find out why these rooms are held in such high regard by the locals. After a day exploring the incredible wilderness of Finland during the summer there really is no better way to relax and unwind, we’re sure you’ll agree!
